Global Instability and New World Order: Insights from President Ilham Aliyev

In an era marked by rapid global changes, Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev shared his perspectives on the future of world stability during an interview with Euronews. Addressing the audience at the Global Baku Forum in the Azerbaijani capital, Aliyev emphasized the unpredictability of achieving global stability in the near future.

Aliyev remarked on the ongoing “global transformations” and highlighted the absence of a clear roadmap for new international interactions. “The old world order seems to no longer be here,” he stated, adding that the creation of a new configuration remains uncertain. He underscored the importance of countries focusing on self-reliance over external assistance or even international law.

Expressing a more realistic outlook rather than an optimistic one, Aliyev discussed the complexities of resolving significant global conflicts, particularly the ongoing war in Ukraine. “Even if the war stops, there’s no guarantee it will not erupt again,” he noted, drawing parallels to the long-standing ceasefire between Azerbaijan and Armenia, which failed to culminate in a permanent peace agreement.

The South Caucasus, a region burdened by decades of “confrontation and hostility,” requires robust security mechanisms to prevent future crises, Aliyev emphasized. He advocated for an inclusive approach to maintain the current period of relative calm and to foster peaceful coexistence reminiscent of the Soviet era’s harmony.

Azerbaijan, alongside its regional counterparts, transitioned from being a Soviet republic to an independent state in October 1991. While independence introduced new challenges, Aliyev noted the active interaction among the republics during the Soviet period.

Commenting on the present state of Azerbaijani-Armenian relations, Aliyev acknowledged the “big advantage” of recent years’ stability. However, he cautioned that true stability hinges on the finalization of a peace agreement, stating, “Until a peace agreement is signed, the stability is not here.”
