Strengthening National Security: Taiwan’s Response to Chinese Threats

Taiwanese leader William Lai Ching-te has characterized China as a “hostile foreign force” while unveiling a series of comprehensive national security strategies. During a recent address, Taiwan’s president announced plans to reinstate a military court system to prosecute crimes such as espionage, while also implementing stricter residency requirements for individuals from China, Hong Kong, and Macau.

The announcement swiftly elicited a response from Beijing, labeling Lai a “destroyer of cross-Straits peace” and a “creator of crisis.” While China maintains its claim over Taiwan as part of its territory, Taiwan continues to assert its status as a sovereign entity.

Lai justified these measures citing a series of recent espionage incidents linked to China, emphasizing the need for enhanced legal safeguards to prevent and detect such activities. He accused Beijing of attempting to “subvert, obtain secrets, lure members of the armed forces, and influence public opinion.”

The reintroduced military court system will focus on prosecuting offenses like sedition, aiding the enemy, leaking confidential information, and dereliction of duty. Notably, Taiwan’s Defense Ministry recently confirmed an incident where a retired air force major shared classified military intelligence with China in exchange for money.

In another move, Taiwan’s government expelled the Chinese spouse of a Taiwanese citizen following her social media posts that praised Beijing’s leadership and suggested that China could conquer Taiwan in half an hour.

In response to China’s aggressive rhetoric, Taiwan has been bolstering its defense capabilities, acquiring new missiles, U.S. tanks, and aircraft, alongside developing domestically-produced submarines. Additionally, the island has extended the mandatory national military service period for men from four months to one year.
